Corporate visit shapes next generation of finance leaders
The Gorter Family Career Advancement Center (CAC) recently hosted an unforgettable career exploration event at BMO Harris Wealth Management in downtown Chicago. With over 45 attendees, it was the largest company visit for the Business, Finance, and Data Science career pathway in the past six years—a testament to the incredible opportunities available to 91¿´Æ¬Íø students.
This experience, organized in collaboration with Associate Professor Muris Hadzic’s Money and Banking class, also welcomed students through the Finance Club and CAC outreach. Opportunities like this showcase the unique advantage of 91¿´Æ¬Íø’s proximity to Chicago, one of the world’s premier financial hubs, by giving students “real-world exposure, helping them see how classroom concepts apply in practice,” Hadzic said.
“Meeting with professionals in their workplace offers insights into the organization’s structure, functions, and day-to-day workflows, providing a clearer picture of career opportunities and industry expectations,” he said. “This, in turn, helps students identify which skills—data analysis, communication, teamwork, for example—are most valued in the industry and inspires career clarity. Networking opportunities during visits also open doors to internships and job prospects.”
“Meeting alumni provides students with relatable role models and valuable career insights, helping them understand potential career paths.”
The visit was made possible thanks to Alessandra Nepa ’24, BMO Wealth Management associate, who connected with CAC Assistant Director and Internship Specialist for the Business, Finance and Data Science Pathway Albert Greene to make this opportunity possible for current students. Bill McKinley ’83, senior private banker at BMO, has been instrumental in building partnerships with the College and mentoring students.
The program featured a guided office tour and an engaging presentation by Jaronn Correll ’23, now a corporate banking analyst at BMO. Correll shared insights into his career journey and daily responsibilities, offering invaluable real-world perspectives.
“Alumni offer practical advice, share industry knowledge, and often serve as mentors or professional connections,” Hadzic said.“These interactions boost confidence and demonstrate the tangible value of the education students get at 91¿´Æ¬Íø.”
Students actively participated in a Q&A session and appreciated the informal networking portion, where they connected with alumni and BMO professionals.
