Emergency Information

The following information provides recommended procedures, and identifies who you should contact in case of an emergency on campus.

Medical Emergency

If a person …
    isUNCONSCIOUS
    hasDIFFICULTY BREATHING
    isCOMPLAINING OF CHEST PAIN
   or isBLEEDING PROFUSELY

Call 911 and then notify Public Safety at 847-735-5555

  • Do not attempt to move the person unless they are in danger of further injury
  • Provide first aid or CPR if you know how

If the person …
    isCONSCIOUS
    hasno DIFFICULTY BREATHING
    doesnothaveCHEST PAIN
   or isnot BLEEDING PROFUSELY

Call Public Safety at 847-735-5555

  • Provide first aid if possible

If alcohol poisoning is suspected, keep the person awake and do not give them any food or liquids


Mental Health Emergency

In the event of overtly threatening behavior constituting an immediate threat to you or others, call Public Safety at 847-735-5555.

In non-emergency situations, refer students to the Health and Wellness Center at 847-735-5240.  If after hours, students should call the Mental Health Crisis Line at  847-735-5300.

Insured faculty and staff should be referred to the Employee Assistance Program at 888-887-4114.


Fire

  1. Alert people in the immediate area of the fire, andevacuate immediately
  2. Activate a fire alarm
  3. Close doors as you leave
  4. Call 911 and then notify Public Safety at 847-735-5555 immediately

If smoke, heat, or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with the door closed

Signal for help using a brightly colored cloth at the window

Make sure you know how to operate the fire extinguisher in your residence or work area. 


Active Shooter

Quickly determine your best option to protect your own life

RUN -  If there is an escape path

  • Leave the building immediately
  • Leave your belongings
  • Help others escape if possible
  • Call 911 when you are safe

HIDE - If you cannot run

  • Lock and/or  barricade the door
  • Silence your cell phone and be very quiet
  • Hide behind large objects

FIGHT -  As a last resort

  • Attempt to  incapacitate the shooter
  • Improvise weapons

When law enforcement arrives on the scene

  • Keep your hands visible
  • Avoid pointing/yelling
  • Know that help is on the way

Weather Emergencies

The Department of Public Safety is equipped with weather radios that broadcast news of severe weather watches and warnings. If a tornado warning is issued, the Department of Public Safety will initiate an emergency broadcast message and you should …

  • Seek shelter inside a building
  • Go to the basement or a small room or hallway on the lowest level
  • Stay away from windows and pull shades down to reduce injury from flying glass
  • Remain sheltered until you receive an “all clear” message

When Severe Thunderstorms may impact the area, you should …

  • Remain alert to conditions and seek shelter inside a building
  • Stay away from windows and pull shades down
  • Minimize use of electrical equipment and appliances until the storm has passed.

Utility Failure

In the event of a major utility failure during regular business hours, go to a safe location and call Facilities Management at 847-735-5040 or notify Public Safety at 847-735-5555.

Gas Leak/Unusual Odors

  • Cease all operations immediately
  • Do not use cell phones or other electronic equipment
  • Evacuate immediately
  • Do not use the elevator

Flooding or Major Plumbing Failure

  • Cease using all electrical equipment
  • Avoid contact with the water
  • Evacuate immediately
  • Do not use the elevator

Hazardous Materials

Placards are posted outside all rooms containing hazardous materials or equipment.

Detailed safety procedures are in place in all campus laboratories where dangerous materials are used and stored. If you encounter a hazardous material and no trained individuals are in the area, you should …

Emergency Communication

In the event of an emergency, 91¿´Æ¬Íø has a variety of resources to notify emergency responders and campus community members. They include:

Broadcast voice and text messages
Voicemail and text messages are sent to campus community members through their residential, office, and cell phone numbers.

All students, faculty and staff are subscribed through their lakeforest.edu email.

The College will use the website to share emergency-related information.

National Emergency Alert System
This national system broadcasts emergency alerts via radio and television. It is jointly administered by the FCC, FEMA, and the National Weather Service.
