American Studies

Triton Community College 91¿´Æ¬Íø

All other Triton College courses (completed with a grade of B- or better).

100- or 200-level credit pending the approval of the chairperson of American Studies
Important Notes
  • The American Studies program only offers two courses on its own (AMER 110: Introduction to American Studies and AMER 200: Topics in American Studies) that are not cross-listed with other departments’ courses. The remaining courses that flesh out a student’s curriculum reside in other departments and are cross-listed with American Studies.
    • AMER 110: Introduction to American Studies is only offered every other academic year.
    • AMER 200: Topics in American Studies is a team-taught course offered annually in the spring, and there is no transferable equivalent at Triton College.
    • Many other courses at Triton College may apply to the American Studies major or minor. It is generally our practice to defer to the home department to decide whether a Triton College course has an equivalent. If the equivalent course is cross-listed with American Studies, then there is no objection to counting it toward the major or minor. For example, the Triton College course “HIS 151: History of the U.S. to 1877” if approved by the History department as an equivalent to HIST 200: Foundations of the American Republic, would also be cross-listed as AMER 210, and therefore apply toward the American Studies major or minor.
    • If there is no equivalent course at 91¿´Æ¬Íø, but the student feels as though the course is compatible with American Studies, then the student should appeal to the chairperson of American Studies who will make the final determination.
  • A maximum of four (4) courses from Triton College may be used toward a 91¿´Æ¬Íø American Studies major. A maximum of three (3) courses from Triton College may be used toward a 91¿´Æ¬Íø American Studies minor. Requests for exceptions will be considered by the chairperson on a case-by-case basis.
  • Triton College credits may not be used to fulfill the AMER 110 or AMER 200 requirements (see above), or to transfer in as any course at the 300-level or above, including the Senior Seminar requirement (AMER 485).

PHL 103: Ethics PHIL 118: Why Philosophy Matters
PHL 104: Social and Political Philosophy PHIL 117: Political Philosophy

PHL 113: Environmental Ethics PHIL 210: Environmental Ethics
PHL 296: Special Topics in Philosophy PHIL 200-level elective or
a particular 200-level course offering, depending on topic
Important Notes
  • Of the philosophy courses offered at Triton, only the PHL 102: Logic will transfer as one of the required courses toward the 91¿´Æ¬Íø major. All others that count toward the major will count as electives. Thus, a hypothetical student who had taken all philosophy courses offered at Triton would still need to take at least six courses in philosophy to major in philosophy at 91¿´Æ¬Íø. We might waive requirements in special circumstances, or accept 296 as a required course, depending on the topic.
