Humanities 2020 Mellon Foundation Grant

Courtney Joseph

Courtney Pierre Joseph is an Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at 91¿´Æ¬Íø. Her work on the Humanities 2020 grant has focused on the power of oral histories, partnering with the Chicago Humanities Festival, Heartland Alliance, and the Haitian American Museum of Chicago. Dr. Joseph has worked with her students in and out of the classroom on how to conduct oral histories as a way to preserve the histories of everyday people, often marginalized from the classic archive. She looks forward to continuing her partnership with the Haitian American Museum of Chicago on building the first oral history digital archive dedicated to the Haitian community in Chicago. This work aligns well with her forthcoming manuscript, DuSable’s Diaspora: Haiti, Blackness, and Belonging in Chicago.
